Question
A) find the magnitude of the electric field these wires produce at point P which is 60.0 cm from each wire. B) find the direction of the electric field these wires produce at point P which is 60.0 cm from each wire ( counterclockwise from the +y axis) C) if an electron is released at P , what is the magnitude of the net force that these wires exert on it . D) if an electron is released at P , what is the direction of the net force that these wires exert on it ( counterclockwise from the +y axis ) Figure 1 of 1 1.20 m Type here to searchExplanation / Answer
given two rods of length L = 1.2 m
charge be Q
now, electric field due to a finite charged rod due at a distacne d from it on its perpendicular bisector is given by
E = 2k*sigma*L/*d*sqroot(L^2 + 4d^2)
so the top rod , Q = 3.5 micro C
sigma = Q/L
Ey = 2k*3.5*10^-6/sqroot(1.2^2 + 4*0.6^2)*0.6 = 61734.35 N/C in -y direction
similiarly
Electric field due to other rod, Q = -3.5 micro C, d = 0.6 m , L = 1.2 m
Ex = 61734.35 N/C in -ve x direction
a. Magnitude of electric field = sqroot(Ex^2 + Ey^2) = 87305.55 N/C
b. direction =180 + theta ( clockwise from + y axis)
tan(theta) = Ex/Ey
theta = 45 deg
so direction = 225 dec Clockwise form +y axis
c. when electron is reelased from P
net force on electron F = qE = 1.6*10^-19*E = 1.39688*10^-14 N
d. direction of force on electron = theta = 45 deg clockwise from +y axis
