Question
A) a kereru new zealand wood pigeon travelling at 1.5 m/s due west has an elastic collision with an airbus a380 aeroplane. fortunately for the kereru the a380 was only travelling at 0.1 m/s in the easterly direction at the tim. with what speed is the kereru travelling after the collision?
B) the kereru having proven itself somewhat careless has a totally inelastic collision with a cat. if just before the collision the 0.65 kg kereru was travelling 2.0 m/s north and the 3.0 kg cat was traveling 5.5 m/s south what is the velocity of the ball of fur and feathers just after the collision?

Explanation / Answer
1)since the speed og the plane is very large as compared to the vird, it's velocity will remain unaffected.
let the speed of the bird be v.so,
v=(m1-m2)*u1/(m1+m2) + 2m2/(m1+m2) *u2
=-1.5-2*0.1
=1.7 m/s(due east)
2)let the final velocity of the cat be v.
so velocity of the bird=v
so conserving momentum,
0.65*2-3*5.5=(0.65+3)*v
or v=-4.16
so final velocity of both=-4.16 m/s (towards south)
