Question

A) Write a simple research question that would require you to use at least one of the psychomotor skills (speed, agility, power, coordination, balance, reaction time). Define your null and alternative hypotheses – make sure you use the proper wording. Additionally, state your independent and dependent variables and the level of measurement of both variables.

B) Think about the psychomotor assessments we learned about previously. Imagine you had a class of 4th graders that were going to do the same assessments. In your opinion, what wouldbe the biggest obstacles to achieving validity (at least 2) in using those assessments and how would you overcome each of these challenges.

Explanation / Answer

(A)

A possible research question can be as follows:

A researcher is interested to know whether a carefully designed diet chart by him would allow people to show better speed results in athletic events.

In order to test this he draws a random sample of 20 people and give them the diet chart as prescribed by him, and another random sample of 20 people who do not take this special diet chart.

He checks the speeds of both in a 100m race event and finds that the mean time for group taking his special diet chart was 15.3 seconds with SD of 4.5 s and the mean time for the other group was 16.1 seconds with a SD of 4.7 s.

Does the data show sufficient evidence to support the claim that carefully designed diet chart improved the running speeds ? Check at the 0.05 significance level.

Here the dependent variable is the mean time which is a ratio variable, and the independent variable is whether a person takes special diet or not, and this is a nominal variable.
