A process commonly used to cool a gas is to expand it adiabatically against an external pressure. Explain in your own words why this works. Incidentally, this is how most refrigerators work. At the back of a refrigerator is a gas compressor that pressurizes a coolant gas that is then expanded adiabatically, cooling the gas. The cold gas is then run through a heat exchange coil that loops along the back of the refrigerator and places it in thermal contact with the refrigerator's contents, cooling them. The gas then returns to the compressor where the cycle starts again. The compressor needs to perform work on the gas to compress it, hence why your fridge needs electricity!

to compress the gas we need a compressor but the compressor cannot compress the gas itself,to compress the gas a motor which converts electrical energy in to mechanical energy is needed,this mechanical energy supplied to compressor compresses the gas.For motor to work it need electricity.
