Question

The passage indicates that the force of the blow was so great that the player's femur was broken. This indicates that the __________ of the impact was very SMALL? (Please explain)
A. Velocity B. Force C. Acceleration A basketball player of mass 70 kg raises on the ball of one foot to take a shot. To do this, the gastrocnemius muscle pulls on the heel through the Achilles tendon with force F and the tibia pushes down on the ankle joint with force P. The floor pushes up on the ball of the foot witlh force, mg, equal to the player's weight. The situation is diagramed in Figure 1. mg 4.5 12.5 cm Heel Toe Flgure 1 The player shoots the basketball (mass 1.50 kg) from a height of 2 meters above the floor, at an angle of 45o above the horizontal and with an initial speed of 10 m/sec. The ball does not reach the basket. During the scuffle under the basket, the ball is thrown violently back toward the player who took the shot and strikes him in the thigh. The ball, moving horizontally with a spee of 15 m/sec, strikes the vertical thigh and rebounds horizontally with a speed of 10 m/sec. This situation is diagramed in Figure 2. Hip 10.0 m/s 15.0 m/s Knce Flgure 2

Explanation / Answer

According to Newton's 2nd law, Force is the time rate of change of momentum of a system and it is directed in the direction of the change in momentum.

F = - dp/dt

so, here when the ball rebounds, there is a change in momentum of the ball. For this change in momentum, if the time of impact is less, the force generated will be high.

therefore, if the Force indicated was enough to break Femur, then the time of impact was very small, hence giving a large force. [option - D].
