CP In the circuit shown in Fig. P30.61, element = 60.0 V, R1 = 40.0 Ohm, R2 = 25.0 Ohm, and L = 0.300 H. Switch S is closed at t = 0. Just after the switch is closed, (a) what is the potential difference vab across the resistor R1: (b) which point, a or b, is at a higher potential: (c) what is the potential difference vcd across the inductor L: (d) which point, c or d, is at a higher potential? The switch is left closed a long time and then opened. Just after the switch is opened, (e) what is the potential difference vab across the resistor R1: (f) which point, a or b, is at a higher potential: (g) what is the potential difference vcd across the inductor L: (h) which point, c or d, is at a higher potential?Explanation / Answer
given E = 60 V
R1 = 40 ohm
R2 = 25 ohm
L = 0.3 H
a. at t = 0, switch is closed, so, the induxtor acts as open circuit
so Vab = E = 60 V
b. Potential at A is higher as it is connected to the positive terminal of the battery
c. Vcd ( across the inductor ) = 0 as it is an open circuit
d. both points are at same potential
e. after long time, the inductor starts behaving like a short circuit component
so, again, R1 and R2 become parallel resistors, so Vab = 60 V
f. A is at higher potential again
g. Vcd = 0 V
h. both points are at same potential
