Question

You study for a test, but due to the fact that you waited too long, you only learn 60% of the material. The test is all multiple choice, with each question having 6 choices.

a) If you come across a question for which you don't know the answer, what's the probability of getting the answer right?

b) If you come across a question for which you do know the answer, what's the probability of getting it right (hint: don't “over think” this - what does it mean if you know the answer...)?

c) What is the overall probability of getting any question correct?

Explanation / Answer

Lets Assume that if the question comes from the learnt material, the chance of getting correct =1

a)P(Right|Not read material)=1/6

b)P(Right|Learnt Material)=1

c)P(Right)=P(Learnt Material)*P(Right|Learnt Material)+P(Not learnt material)*P(Right|Not read material)

P(right)=0.6*1+0.4*(1/6)=0.67
