Question

You are a fancy engineer at a water treatment company. You’ve asked two

interns to make you six batches each of a reagent that you need to use in a

water treatment process. You want to now figure out which of the two interns

Intern Reagent concentrations (mg/1) #1 | 40.1 45.8 46.7 41.6 33.1 18.8 #2 | 57.4 29.1 23.6 26.2 17.5 71.4 a) Calculate the mean and standard deviation of each of the batches of reagents. Each batch is listed in the table rows. b) Which intern's batch is more consistent and why?

Explanation / Answer

The standard deviation of the first sample is s1 = 10.65

Mean of the first sample x1 = 37.35

The standard deviation of the second sample is s2 = 21.62

Mean of the second sample is x2 = 37. 53

Now, the coefficient of variation for the first sample is = s1 / x1

= 10.65/37.35 = 0.29

Coefficient of variation for the second sample is = s2/x2

= 21.62/ 37.53 = 0.58

Since coefficient of variation for the first sample is is less than coefficient of variation for the second sample.

First intern is better. And more consistent
