Consider a random variable X whose cumulative distribution function is given below. 0 for x0 1/4 for 0Explanation / Answer
Question 1:
As 5% of them have got PHDs,
Probability that the third one would be the first one to have a PHD would be
= Probability that first two wont have a PHD* Probability that the third person would have a PHD
= (1-0.05)2*0.05
= 0.045125
Therefore B) 0.0451 is the correct answer here.
Question 2:
40% of the employees are contaminated. The probability that the fifth individual tested will be the second positive?
= Probability that there will be 1 positive in first 4 trials*Probability that the 5th one will be positive
= 4*(1-0.4)3*0.4*0.4
= 0.13824
Therefore B) 0.13824 is the required probability here.
Question 3:
This is similar to the last question:
Probability that the second defective is the 6th trial
= Probability that there is 1 defective in first 5 trials*Probability that the 6th is defective
= 5*(1-0.05)4*0.05*0.05
= 0.01
Therefore C) 0.01 is the required probability here.
