The fifty people who consent to the study are randomly assigned to a screening by one of the psychiatrists to assess their current mental health, then a subsequent screening 6 months later by the same psychiatrist to assess any change in mental health. Unbeknownst to the subjects, one of the psychiatrists prescribed all their patients with placebos, while the other prescribed all their patients the antidepressant. 2.b) A medical research is curious if a new heart transplant procedure, meant to reduce mortality in high risk patients, was actually doing so. They contacted a randomly selected set of hospitals, only half of which had implemented the new procedure, and compared survival rates after 2 years of patients receiving the new procedure against those of patients who received the older procedure. 2.c) Due to an influx of animals needing homes, a local animal shelter employee suggested running an ad campaign to encourage people to get pets. The employee showed that when an ad campaign was run the previous November and December, adoption rates were almost twice that of the two months prior. 2.d) Researchers early in the development of a weight loss drug mean to reduce appetite are testing the medication on rats. They overfeed a group of 30 rats, then give all the rats the medication and monitor their eating habits when given open access to food.
