Question
The police department of a major city needs to update its budget. For this purpose, they need to understand the variation in their fines collected from motorists for speeding. As a sample, they recorded the speeds of cars driving past a location with a 2525 mph speed limit, a place that in the past has been known for producing fines. The mean of 100 representative readings was 28.7828.78 mph, with a standard deviation of 3.463.46 mph. a) How many standard deviations from the mean would a car going the speed limit be? b) Which would be more unusual, a car traveling 3939 mph or one going 1616 mph? a) A car traveling at the speed limit is nothing standard deviations from the mean. (Round to two decimal places as needed.)
Explanation / Answer
a) for numebr of std deviation from mean for a car which is travelling at the speed limit =(X-mean)/std deviation
=(25-28.78)/3.46= -1.09
therefore A car traveling at the speed limit is (-1.09) standard deviations from the mean.
b) for a car with speed 39 mph; z score =(X-mean)/std deviation =(39-28.78)/3.46=2.95
for a car with speed 16 mph; z score =(X-mean)/std deviation =(16-28.78)/3.46=-3.69
as distance in terms of standard deviation from mean is more for car travelling with 16 mph.
therefore a car travelling 16 mph is more unusual.
