a)       Formative assessment- It contributes to learning through providing feedback and occurs in the process of making meaning of new content or integrating it with what student already knows. It can be thought as informal and does not contribute to the final mark given for the module; but is immediate and considered as the most powerful type of assessment for improving student understanding and performance.

Example – an in-class exercise of reading aloud to improve spoken English, interactive class discussion

b)       Summative assessment- This usually takes place at the end of learning. The feedback to the student is usually limited and the student usually has no opportunity to be reassessed. It contributes to the final mark given for the module and thus, quantifies achievement.

Example – Final Exams, Project Reports

c)       Formal assessment- Formal assessments are also referred as standardized measures. These tests are the general ways of finding out the learning advancement of the students that have been improved or decreased during period and contain the formal grading system.

Examples - exams, Intelligence tests

d)       Informal assessment- These assessments are meant to test and evaluate students’ performance and skill levels without using scoring patterns. There are no standardized tools to measure or evaluate the performances in these assessment tools.

Examples – answering questions in class

Assessments and learning are tightly interlinked with each other. Assessments carve a proper learning path and cultivate different attitudes and behavior required for development of a student. There can be many other points which the assessments help in like: to determine intended learning outcomes of course are getting achieved, to motivate students to perform better, to evaluate effectiveness of teaching, etc.

Assessments should be a mixture of formative and summative. Formative assessments can help in a feedback based approach which ensures that teachers get an early idea for a student’s abilities and skills to make sure it is not too late for the students to correct their mistakes; besides, it can help them in a talent shaping. Summative assessments are equally essential as they quantify a student’s efforts and help them in being motivated to perform better.

There can be many approaches taken so that assessments can help in improved learning. When designing assessment plan, there should be a clear picture of what different skills a teacher wants his/her students to achieve based on learning outcomes. Assessment should help equip students with a wide range of transferable skills and competencies. Same assessment can’t be used for all cases. Assessment can test memorizing, acquiring facts or skills, or methods that can be reproduced when and if required. The level and type of skills and competencies imparted through assessment should depend on the level and type of course. Besides, When analyzing assessment tasks, some questions can be like: What types of questions did students do particularly well on or struggled with? Which assessment questions did students avoid or Which assessment questions were the most popular?, etc. It is thus advisable to give a little time to analyzing the assessment experiences in order to contribute to continuous improvement of teaching and learning, and to refine practices and policies of assessment.
