Question

PLEASE HELP!!

Does dieting or exercising cause more weight loss?

Method 1: Randomly Divide 200 people into two groups. One group must only diet, and the other group must only exercise. At the end of 6 months, compare the average weight loss among the two groups.

Method 2: Randomly pick 200 people and ask whether they diet or exercise. At the end of 6 months, compare the average weight loss among the two groups.

Which method is an observational study? Which method is an experiment? Who are the individuals? What are the variables? What is the response? What are the treatments for the experiment?

Explanation / Answer

a) An observational study draws inferences from a sample to a population where the independent variable is not under the control of the researcher because of ethical concerns or logistical constraints. One common observational study is about the possible effect of a treatment on subjects, where the assignment of subjects into a treated group versus a control group is outside the control of the investigator.

So, Method-2 is the observational study... as the independent variable weight loss is not under control...

b) An experiments is a systematic method to determine the relationship between factors affecting a process and the output of that process. In other words, it is used to find cause-and-effect relationships. This information is needed to manage process inputs in order to optimize the output.

So, Method-1 is an experiment... as there are two factors "diet" and "exercise" of controlling the weight....

c) The randomly selected 200 people are treated as individuals ...

d) Weight loss is the variable under study ...

e) amount of weight loss per individual is the response ...

f) There are two treatments .... ie... "Diet" & "Exercise" ...
