Question

(a) A sample of 32 teachers from Perils has an average salary of RM2612 per month, with a standard deviation of RM122. A sample of 36 teachers from Selangor has an average salary of RM2310 per month, with a standard deviation of RM111. Test the hypothesis if there is any significant differences in teachers' salaries between the two states by using 0.05 of significance level. (b) A study was conducted to look a response to allergen inhalation in allergic primates. In a study of 12 monkeys, the standard error of the mean for allergen inhalation was found to be 0.4 for one of the items studied. We wish to know if we may conclude that the population variance is not 4 (alpha = 0.05).

Explanation / Answer

Ans: b)chi square test for variance

sample Std. Dev=std. error *sqrt(12)=0.4*3.464=1.39

Chi square =(12-1)*1.39^ 2/4^2=1.33

Degree of freedom=12-1=11

P-value=0.0002<0.05.

Hence,we reject null hypothesis and accept alternate hypothesis i.e variance is not equal to 4.

b)

Hypothesis test for two independent sample means

t=(2612-2310)/sqrt (122^2/32+111^2/36)=302/28.41=10.63

P-value is zero and <0.05,hence we reject null hypothesis.

It means that both have different salaries.
