Question
Based on a USA today poll, assume that 10% of the population believes that attending college is no longer a good investment. Use a graphing calculator to answer the following problems. Show the calculator entry that you used for each problem. a) Find the probability that among 22 randomly selected people; exactly 5 believe that college is no longer a good investment. b) Find the probability that among 22 randomly selected people, at least 1 believes that college is no longer a good investment. c) The poll results were obtained by Internet users logged on the USA Today web site, and the Internet users decided whether to ignore the posted survey or respond. What type of sample is this? What does it suggest about the validity of the results?Explanation / Answer
Solution:-
a) The probability that among 22 selected people exactly 5 believe that college is no longer a good investment is 0.04392.
p = 0.10, n = 22, x = 5
By applying binomial distribution:-
P(x, n, p) = nCx*p x *(1 - p)(n - x)
P(x = 5) = 0.04392
b) The probability that among 22 selected people atleast 1 believe that college is no longer a good investment is 0.9015.
p = 0.10, n = 22, x = 1
By applying binomial distribution:-
P(x, n, p) = nCx*p x *(1 - p)(n - x)
P(x > 1 ) = 0.9015
