Question

8. (1 pt) Strength training or cardio? At a local health club, a researcher sampled 75 people whose primary exercise is cardiovascular and 75 people whose primary exercise is strength training. The researcher’s objective is to assess the effect of type of exercise on cholesterol. Each subject reported to a clinic to have his or her cholesterol measure. The subjects were unaware of the purpose of the study, and the technician measuring the cholesterol was not aware of the subjects’ type of exercise. (mnf73/11.8) (a) This is (i) an observational study (ii) an experiment, but not a double-blind experiment (iii) a double-blind experiment (b) Identify and clearly explain one potential source of bias for this study.

Isnt this an observational study since no treatment is imposed? Can an observational study be double blind? The last sentence of the question makes me think I should be choosing double blind but this does not seem like an experiment because the researcher is not assigning people to groups and forcing them to workout. He is just observing outcomes from previously established behavior, right?

Explanation / Answer

Yes you are right it is observational study. Beucase reseacher did not give any treatment and he/she just observe the outcomes. So option (i) is correct.
