Question

A pharmaceutical company claims that its NSAID remedy will noticeably reduce headache pain in less than 14 minutes. To test this claim, an independent testing agency selected a random sample of 20 headache sufferers from an outpatient clinic and asked them to take the remedy the next time they have a headache and record the length of time minutes until they begin to experience relief. The testing agency wants to determine whether the average length of time until headache relief is less than 14 minutes as the pharmaceutical company claims. a) Suppose the lengths of time until pain relief are normally distributed. Hypotheses b) Suppose the lengths of time until pain relief are not normally distributed, but have some other symmetric distribution. What test would you use?

Explanation / Answer

a) for this case , we shall use the normal distribution , sample size = 20

The hypothesis is

H0 : The NSAID remedydoes not reduce headache in less than 14 minutes

H1 : The NSAID remedy reduces headache in less than 14 minutes

as the sample size is less than 30 , hence we can use a paired sample t test . If the sample size is more than 30 , then we can go for a paired z test

b)

If the data is not normal but symmetric then we can go for the non parametric alternative of the paired sample test such as Wilcoxon signed rank test
