Question
Fully describe the experimental design used in the following scenario Metribuzin is an agricultural chemical that may accumulate in soils, To see if the amount retained in the soil depends on the amount applied to the soil, the following experiment was performed. Three different levels of metribuzin were equal and randomly assigned to a total of 24 plots, After one growing season, the amount of metribuzin in the first three cm of soil was measured. The pH of the soil in each plot was also measured as pH may affect the ability of the soil to retain metribuzin.Explanation / Answer
In Design of Experimetns, better known as DOE, first it is necessar to define experimental variables, In this case we have the amount of metribuzin that is divided in three levels. Let's say none, low and high.
We assigned a number for each level as follow:
low -1
none 0
high 1
We have 24 plots that means that (24/3=8) each treatment is going to be performed 8 times. We draw a table as follow:
Using a program we can assign to each experimetn a random number, for example in excel, we can use the formula randombetween, 0 and 1000, to improve the level of randomness. Then we get the followign table:
Then we order the experiments acoording the number in order to establish the secuences of the experiments, that give us the next sequence:
For the experiments two measures will be obtained, the amount of metribuzin anf the pH.
