Question

The student will demonstrate the simple random, systematic, stratified, and cluster sampling techniques.

The student will explain each of the details of each procedure used.

In this lab, you will be asked to pick several random samples. In each case, describe your procedure briefly, including how you might have used the random number generator, and then list the restaurants in the sample you obtained

The following section contains restaurants stratified by city into columns and grouped horizontally by entree cost (clusters).

A Systematic Sample

Pick a systematic sample of 15 restaurants.

Describe the procedure:

Restaurants Stratified by City and Entree Cost

1. __________ 6. __________ 11. __________ 2. __________ 7. __________ 12. __________ 3. __________ 8. __________ 13. __________ 4. __________ 9. __________ 14. __________ 5. __________ 10. __________ 15. __________

Explanation / Answer

This method is used when the complete list of population is available, such that the units are arranged in order.

Let N be population size , while n be the size of sample required to draw , so that the sampling interval say k is given by k=N/n. In this method we prepare k slips with numbers 1,2...k and draw only one slip randomly. Let the number on the slip draw be I. Now the remaining units of the sample be obtained by adding k successively , so the sample required sampling units are I, I+k,I+2k.....I+(n-1)k.

Systematic sampling of 15 restaurants :--------------

1. First we have to arrange the data in alphabetical order.

2. Population size N =85

3. Sample required n=15

4. Interval k=N/n= 85/15 = 5

5. So prepare 5 slips numbered from 1 ,2 ,3,4,5 then draw one slip randomly.

6. Let the number on the slip be 5 (say)

7. So that the sampling units are 5 , 10 ,20,25,30,35,40,45,50,55,60,65,70,75 are to be included in the sample.

(Arrange data in alphabetical order and then select the samples as mentioned in step 7)
