Question
Based on this study, what would a hypothetical results section in a research proposal look like that confirms the hypothesis that listening to a classical song does improve mood?
The study design for this researcher’s proposed study is quantitative in nature. The proposed study will narrow in on classical music as well as look at a certain age group where all the participants are undergoing cancer treatments. The sample from the target population will be gathered on a volunteer basis by patients at this treatment center. The sample will consist of fifty participants, regardless of gender who fall within the age range of 20-25 years of age. Permission will be obtained from the facility operators to ask for volunteers and once permission is received, each doctor will be contacted to be made aware that this study will take place. The study will begin with a questionnaire that asks about their current mood and emotions that the participants will answer in their own words. The questionnaire will be very simple to complete. There will be 2 parts before the experiment and 3 after. Both questionnaires will have an open ended first question. This will yield more qualitative data whereas the remaining items on the questionnaire will provide measurable, quantitative data that can be graphed and charted. The first question will say: In your own words, please write a sentence that describes your mood at the present moment. This will be used for the sole purpose of getting the participants thinking about what the state of their current mood is. The second question will have pictures of faces with expressions that are similar to the chart used in an emergency room to identify pain levels. The second question will then ask the participant to circle the face that best represents their current mood. They will range from the face labeled with a one having a sad face and tears, to the face labeled with the number 10 having a huge smile showing all its teeth. Each participant will then receive a pair of headphones and they will listen to a song written in 1786 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart called The Marriage of Figaro. The duration of this song is 4 minutes and 51 seconds. The participants will then be given the same questionnaire that they received before the classical song was played to reevaluate their mood. The only change to this questionnaire is that a third question has been added. The third question will read: Was your overall mood improved? This study has the main purpose of providing insight to the immediate mood effects a classical song can have on a person with cancer who falls within the age range of 20-25 years of age. This will determine if the mood of the participant has increased or has not. This study will provide data from question two on the questionnaire as to what extent the participants mood has increased as well as showing data from answers to question number three that provides a yes or no response to a positively impacted mood.
Explanation / Answer
Suppose data has been collected on the moods of patients before and after the classical song is presented to them. Now we will accept the hypothesis that listening to a classical song does improve mood from two types of data.
The answer to the question " Was your overall mood improved? " provides a direct hint at whether the mood of overall patients has increased or not. Simple estimate is if more than 50 % patients responded with yes then we may conclude that there is an imporvement of mood.
Another approach is like this. We take difference of scores of mood faces, that the patients have marked before and after listening to the song. If this difference is significantly different from 0 on the positive side, then we may conclude that the song has imporved the mood of the patients.
