Question

I have data in spss ,1. is underweight,2. is healthy weight, 3. is overweight, 4. is obese ,this is for obese young women in the data set, theres 2976 women in the data set comprising different cateegories,i got the mean and standard deviation from this dataset but want to know how do I get the mean and standard deviation of the obese young women category ,how do I do it on spss?,Is it select cases ,or descriptive ststistics ,Ive tryed everywhere,I need step by step explanation please on how to do it on spss

Explanation / Answer

1. is underweight,2. is healthy weight, 3. is overweight, 4. is obese are the 4 categories.

Case 1: If these categories are given as 4 different columns in the dataset, then the answer is staraight forward and to get the descriptives go to Analyze->Descriptive Statistics->Descriptives.. A dialouge box appears and in that select the column(here obese) or the columns for which you need to get the descriptives. You may select all the columns if necessary. We get the output for descriptive statistics the no of observation(N), minimum, maximum, mean and standard deviations of all the selected variables.

Case 2: Suppose that the data is in a single column say weight and we have to find the mean of some selected weights that fall in some range is to be termed as obese and thus find its mean, then go to data->select cases. In that go to if condition is satisfied and click the if button. Type the condition there i.e. the obese category may be weights that ranges say >80 then type the condition as variable_name>80 and in the output select either copy selected cases to a new dataset and give a dataset name or delete unselected cases. The dataset will now contain only the selected cases(here obese). We may now find the mean by following the Case1 example i.e. by the descriptive statistics option.
