Question

A 20% sugar solution is separated from water by a selective membrane (sucrose can't diffuse through the membrane). Draw an arrow to show which direction will there be a net movement of water. Explain why the water would move in that direction. A 10% sugar solution is separated from a 20% sucrose solution by a selective membrane (sucrose can't diffuse through the membrane). Draw an arrow to show which direction will there be a net movement of water. Explain why the water would move in that direction.

Explanation / Answer

Process of osmosis occurs in this experiment. Osmosis is the net movement of molecules form a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration.

1. As the sucrose solution is hypertonic in nature, so the water will leave the cell and the cell will shrink.

2. Water will again move out of the cell due to tonicity of the sucrose solution.
