Question

From a recent semester, here are eight research questions, tools used, and conclusions.

Do juniors and seniors have a higher stats grades than freshmen and sophomores? This would be the expectation since they are more experienced and possibly more serious.
Conclusion: No, the difference between their means, 2.061 on a 100-point basis, is not statistically significant. p=0.3933.

Among 1,323 BU students, is there a relationship between gender and whether they are undergraduate or graduate students? Contingency table chi-square test.
Conclusion: Yes, the females tend to be graduate students and the males tend to be undergraduates. p=0.000095.

Do adult males and females differ as to the number of hours they watch sporting events each week? Males were expected to watch more.
Conclusion. Yes, the difference between their means, 1.59 hours (4.33M–2.74F) is statistically significant. p=0.0183. Sample sizes: 27M, 30F. Expectation was correct.

Do male and female BU students differ as to their estimates of the capacity, in people, of the elevators in Goodwin Hall?
Conclusion. Yes, the difference between their means, 2.81 people (21.67F–18.86M) is statistically significant. p=0.00475. Sample sizes: 40M, 40F.

Is there a difference in anxiety between freshman/sophomore stats students and junior/senior stats students? J/S students were expected to be less anxious.
Conclusion. No, the difference between their means, 0.333 on a 10-point scale (5.000F/S–4.677J/S) is not statistically significant. p=0.5459. Sample sizes: 22F/S, 31J/S.

Among the 101,291 people who died in Illinois in 2011, is there a relationship between being drunk and dying in a car crash? Contingency table chi-square test.
Conclusion. Yes, the relationship between being drunk and death in a car crash is statistically significant. p=8.02E–164. (!)

Is there a relationship between gender and political affiliation (D/R) among BU students? Contingency table chi-square test.
Conclusion. No, there is a tendency for males to be Republican and females to be Democratic, but it's not statistically significant. p=0.5428. Sample sizes: 24M, 36F.

Among statistics students, is there a difference in anxiety between residents and commuters?
Conclusion. No, the difference between their means, 0.148 on a 10-point scale (5.214C–5.067R) is not statistically significant. p=0.8087. Sample sizes: 14C, 15R.

Explanation / Answer

Solution:-

1)Conclusion: No, the difference between their means, 2.061 on a 100-point basis, is not statistically significant. p=0.3933.

No statistically significance means that there is no difference betweeen the scores.

2) Conclusion: Yes, the females tend to be graduate students and the males tend to be undergraduates. p = 0.000095.

Since the p value of the test is less than the 0.05, hence we have to reject the null hypothesis.

We conclude that there is significant relation ship between gender and education.

3) Do adult males and females differ as to the number of hours they watch sporting events each week? Males were expected to watch more.
Conclusion. Yes, the difference between their means, 1.59 hours (4.33M–2.74F) is statistically significant. p=0.0183. Sample sizes: 27M, 30F. Expectation was correct.

Since p value is less than 0.05, hence we have to reject the null hypothesis.

We have sufficient evidence in the favor of the claim that number of hours they watch sports different for male and females.

4)
Conclusion. Yes, the difference between their means, 2.81 people (21.67F–18.86M) is statistically significant. p=0.00475. Sample sizes: 40M, 40F.

Since p value is less than 0.05, hence we have to reject the null hypothesis.

We have sufficient evidence in the favor of the claim that estimates of capacity of male and female BU students differs.
