Question
Our environment is very sensitive to the amount of ozone in the upper atmosphere. The level of ozone normally found is 4.5 parts/million (ppm). A researcher believes that the current ozone level is at an excess level. The mean of 980 samples is 4.6 ppm. Assume the variance is known to be 1.44 . Does the data support the claim at the 0.05 level? Step 4 of 5 : Enter the decision rule. Reject H0 if z> ____________ (fill in the missing value for the decision rule)
Explanation / Answer
pop.Level = 4.5 ppm
n = 980
sample Level = 4.6
Var = 1.44
Therefore, stdev = 1.2 ppm
Z = (4.6-4.5)/(1.2/sqrt(980)) = 2.61
So, reject Ho if Z> 1.645
By the way since Z=2.61>Zcritical = 1.645, we reject the null hypothesis that Current ozone level is not at access.
