Question
Our chemical company, CHM 2210 LLC, has an order for hexane. Hexane is a key intermediate for our best customer. We know how to run the following reaction safely. We have an inexpensive supply of l-bromopentane: and for us: methyl carbanion is free, so we can sell every pound of hexane we make at a profit. Assume the reaction to produce hexane has a Delta H of -1 kJ/mole: Ea of 5 kJ mole: pre-exponential factor A of 1.0 times 1010 M-1 s-1, and Delta S of 10 J/mole at 25C. What is the equilibrium constant for this reaction at 25C? What are the units for the equilibrium constant? Our customer wants more product and we want more profit. Describe how and why you would change the reagent and or product concentrations to shift the reaction to produce a higher yield, based on l-bromopentane; of the desired product hexane. ...Write the equilibrium equation for the reaction.Explanation / Answer
For arrheius equation
k = Aexp(-Ea/RT)
= 1.0*10^(-10) * exp(-5000/(8.314*298))
= 1.329 * 10^(-11) M-1s-1 ...(1)
since exponential term has no units the unit of k depends on that of A
hence unit of k is M-1s-1
the reaction should shift forward for more yield of the product
from Gibbs equation we have
G = H - TS = -1000 - 298(10) = -3980
G/T = -R lnK
differentiate this and u will get by increasing the temperature the K will increase, hence the product yield will increase
