1. The following data were obtained from an independent-measures research study comparing three treatments for chronic pain. Participants rated their level of pain on a scale from 0 (no pain) to 10 (extreme pain) after two weeks of treatment. Compute an ANOVA by hand and determine if there are any significant differences in level of pain among the treatments.

Treatment 1: 2, 5, 0, 1

Treatment 2: 6, 4, 3, 3

Treatment 3: 7, 8, 6, 3

a. Conduct an ANOVA in SPSS with = 0.05.

b.Provide a situation where an ANOVA would be the appropriate test to run. Describe your independent and dependent variables. Do not include data.

Explanation / Answer

Null hypothesis H0: mew1 = mew2 = mew3 i.e there is no significance difference between the mean level of pain among the three treatments

Alternative hypothesis H1: atleast two of them not equal to zero (two tailed test)

Treatment
Sum of Squares   df   Mean Square   F Sig.
Between Groups   32.000 2   16.000 4.235   .051
Within Groups 34.000 9 3.778
Total   66.000 11

From F tables the critical value of F at 5% level with (2,9) df is 4.256

therefore calculated value < table value (4.235<4.256)

therefore H0 is accepted i.e we may conclude that there is no significance difference between the mean level of pain among the three treatments

b) treatments are dependent variable and factors are independent variable for ANOVA one way classification
