Question
Scenario: You are helping a professor who wants to know if certain strategies (Protective Behavioral Strategies) will be helpful for college students under 21 such that they report less alcohol consumption and fewer problems. We’re interested in testing several hypotheses. Participants were all college students at ODU. You collect data at one time-point.
Hypothesis 1: Hazardous alcohol use (AUDIT) is negatively related to academic performance (CGPA). Hypothesis 2: PBS use (PBSTotal) will be reported differently by men and women (Sex). Hypothesis 3: Age and gender (Sex) will predict PBS use (PBSTotal).
Participants were all college students at ODU. You collect data at one time-point.
Describe the distribution (i.e., skewness, kurtosis) for each variable.
Explanation / Answer
AUDIT variable: Alcohol use can be right skewed.. Since there can be lot of students falling in the initial small buckets of alcohol use(as more number of students consume smaller amounts of alcohol)
PBS use: This can be normally distributed. As a guess, number of students watching it highly will be same as number of students watching it very rarely
Sex: 50-50 distribution is expected
