Question

The following table contains the ACT scores and the GPA (grade point average) for eight college students. Grade point average is based on a four-point scale and has been rounded to one digit after the decimal. Estimate the relationship between GPA and ACT using OLS; that is, obtain the intercept and slope estimates in the equation GPA = hat beta_0 + beta_1 ACT Comment on the direction of the relationship. Does the intercept have a useful interpretation here? Explain. How much higher is the GPA predicted to be if the ACT score is increased by five points? Compute the fitted values and residuals for each observation, and verify that the residuals (approximately) sum to zero. What is the predicted value of GPA when ACT = 20? How much of the variation in GPA for these eight students is explained by ACT? Explain.

Explanation / Answer

i)

{21,2.8},{24,3.4},{26,3},{27,3.5},{29,3.6},{25,3},{25,2.7},{30,3.7}

when we solve we get

GPA^ = 0.568132+0.102198*ACT^

if ACT is increased by 5 points , GPA will increase by 0.102198*5 = 0.51099

ii) Do it yourself , make two column 1)yi (given) 2) y ^ (predicted by above equation)

when you will sum the differences , you will get zero.

iii)GPA = 0.568132+0.102198* 20 = 2.6120

iv) R^2 = 0.577424

hence 0.577424 in GPA is explained by ACT
