An LCD display has a 1000 times 750 pixels display. In the manufacturing process, defect can occur which render some pixels defective, but the display is still considered functional (saleable) if the display contains just a few defective pixels as a few defective pixels will hardly be noticeable. Suppose the probability that a pixel is defective is 10^-5, and the event a specific pixel is defective is independent of the event that some other pixel is independent. If the limit on defective pixels is set as 15, what fraction of manufactured displays will be considered acceptable?

Explanation / Answer

mean no of faulty pixels= 1000x750x10-5 = 7.5

variance of no of faulty pixels = 1000x750x10-5*(1-10-5) =7.499925

standard deviation = 7.499925 = 2.738

z for 15 is (15-7.5)/ 2.738 = 2.739, pavlue = 0.9969

proportion of displays accepted are 0.9969
