Question

You were recently hired as an intern at a local machine shop. The head machinist hands you a bag of hardware, which he knows to contain three 1/4"-20 bolts and four 1/4"-28 bolts, all of varying lengths. (a) You reach into the bag and randomly (i.e., without looking) select a bolt, which you place on a workbench. What is the probability that you picked a 1/4"-20 bolt? You then reach in and pick another bolt (without putting the first one back). What is the probability that you now have one 1/4 -20 bolt and one 1/4"-28 bolt on the bench?

Explanation / Answer

There are 3 1/4"- 20 bolts and 4 1/4"- 28 bolts

Total number of bolts = 7

(a) Probability = 3/7

(b) Probability = (3/7)(4/6) = 2/7
