Question
A certain factory operates three different shifts. Over the last year. 200 accidents have occurred at the factory. Some of these can be attributed at least is part to unsafe working conditions, whereas the others are unreleased to working conditions. The accompanying table given the percentage of accidents falling in each type of accident-shift category. Suppose one of the 200 accident reports is randomly selected from a file of reports and the shift and type of accident are determined. What are the simple events? What is the probability that the selected accident was attributed to unsafe coordinates? What is the probability that the selected accident did not occur on the day shift?Explanation / Answer
Solution:-
a) The simple events are
Accidents occuring in Day shift
Accidents occuring in Swing shift
Accidents occuring in Night shift
Accidents occuring in Unsafe conditioins
Accidents occuring Unrelated to conditions.
b) The probability that selected accidents are attributed to unsafe conditions is 0.23.
Percentage of accidents occuring due to unsafe conditions = 10 + 8 + 5 = 23%
The probability that selected accidents are attributed to unsafe conditions = 23/100 = 0.23
c) The probability that selected accidents did not occur on the day shift is 0.55.
Percentage of accidents did not occur on the day shift = 8 + 5 + 20 + 22 = 55
The probability that selected accidents did not occur on the day shift = 55/100 = 0.55
