Question
Determine which of the four levels of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio) is most appropriate.
Ranks of cars evaluated by a consumer's magazine.
Choose the correct answer below.
A. The ordinal level of measurement is most appropriate because categories are ordered, but differences cannot be found or are meaningless.
. B. The ratio level of measurement is most appropriate because ratios are meaningful, and there is also a natural zero.
C. The nominal level of measurement is most appropriate because data cannot be arranged in an ordering schemein.
D. The interval level of measurement is most appropriate because differences are meaningful, but there is no natural zero.
Explanation / Answer
Answer - Option (A)
Explanation -
The rank of cars can only take integral values like 1,2,3, and so on.
The nominal scale is used in categorical classification when there is no order of the classes involved. For example, color of the cars.
The Ordinal scale is similar to the nominal scale with only difference that there is order of the classes involved here. That means, there is some priority order for the classes. For example, the rank of cars.
The other two scale of measurement are used when we have continuous values rather than categorical values. And as we have categorical measurements here (rank is just a class), so we won't be having a rank like 3.5 or 2.78. It will only be positive integers.
So, we would use a ordinal level of measurement because categories are ordered, but differences can not be found or are meaningless.
