Question

Write an example from your major for each of the following topics Categorical variable The color of the house (Red, Blue, Green, etc.) I Phones like iPhone 7, 6, 5, 5s, 3gs Continuous variable The height of student in the class The number of waves that occur on the sea Observational (Correlative) study Exponential study Predictor (independent) and outcome (dependent) variables Classify these variables attributes as applicable [Categorical, Continuous, Binary, Nominal, Ordinal, Interval, Ratio] Stress on an installed water pipe Gear Selection in an Automobile Transmission Reliability Internal Temperature in Fahrenheit of an Office Space Compare and contrast these efforts in terms of whether they are correlational (observational) or experimental research Discuss the advantage of experimental research over correlational in the engineering domain Collecting data on various power plants and reporting on operational impacts on efficiencies of the heat exchanger configurations Varying drive torque on hydraulic pump to determine performance specifications

Explanation / Answer

Solution :-

c)

Positive Correlation: For example, violence and playing video games. When playing vedio games goes up, so does violence. When violence decreases, so does playing video games

Negative Correlation: For example, consumption of garlic and heart diseases. The less garlic you eat, the more you get heart diseases. The more garlic you eat, the less the heart diseases. One variable going in one direction can be used to predict the other variable going in the opposite direction.

d)

In an experimental study, the investigator actively manipulates which groups receive the agent or exposure under study. For example, a researcher interested in the relationship between smoking and lung cancer could randomly assign a group of people who are representative of the general population (selected through random sampling, for example) to smoke a certain number of cigarettes over a certain period of time and assign a second, control group not to smoke. S/he may then record the number of subjects who have lung cancer after a certain number of years.

e) For example, let’s suppose SAT scores are a predictor variable and college GPA is a criterion variable.

or education you attain (independent), the richer you become (dependent).

Problem 2.

a) Continuous data

b) Ratio (as changing the gear and changing the speed hold certain ratio)

c) Binary (as it could be yes or no)

d) Continuous data

Problem 3.

a) Observational, because in an observational study investigators observe subjects and measure variables of interest without assigning treatments to the subjects. The treatment that each subject receives is determined beyond the control of the investigator.

b) Experimental , because in an experiment investigators apply treatments to experimental units (people, animals, plots of land, etc.) and then proceed to observe the effect of the treatments on the experimental units
