Question
A) Sampling Variation A large retail store is conducting research on customers’ perceptions of their brand. They have a list of over 2 million people who shopped in their stores last month. It would take too long to survey all customers, so the researchers used Minitab Express to take a simple random sample of 100 customers from the list of over 2 million. A store manager called each of those 100 customers and asked them a number of questions concerning their brand. Of the 100 customers who were called, 24 answered the phone and completed the survey. a. Identify the sample and the population. i. Sample: ii. Population: b. Is the sample representative of the population? Why or why not? c. Explain why response bias is a potential issue in this study. d. Explain why non-response bias is a potential issue in this study. e. Is this an observational or experimental study? Explain your answer.
Explanation / Answer
(a)
sample: 100 randomly chosen customers (out of all the customers who shopped last month) who were called.
population: over 2 million customers who had shopped last month.
(b)
yes, we are randomly choosing 100 people from the all the customers who had shopped last month. so this sample is a representative of the population.
(c)
yes, response bias might affect this survey, depending on sociall desirability and/or the leading questions. although this maybe the case with all feedback related surveys.
(d)
as a large number of the sample units were unavailable , the survey is definitely facing non-response bias, this can significantly overestimate or underestimate some perception.
(e)
this is an observational study, as the perception of the customers is tried to be captured through the study, no experiment was setup to have people shop from the store and others not, control group etc.
