Question

Lesson 2-1 What Are the Chances? 91 2-1 Class 1. What's wrong with the logic displayed by Rachel in the following conversation? Explain in depth. Rachel: I have a 50-50 chance of passing this exam. Ross: Why do you say that? That doesn't sound very optimistic. Rachel: Well, it's just like flipping a coin-there are two possibilities. I'll either pass or I won't So I have a 50% chance of passing. 2. Make a list of some things you can do to change the probability of passing an exam. 3. There are 45 applicants for 2 really great jobs, and you're one of them. If every applicant has an equal chance what's the probability that you'll get the job? Explain why theoretical probability is probably not a very realistic way of deciding your chances of landing the job in Question 3. 4. 5. The promotional materials for a certain program at a community college boast that out of their 480 most recent graduates, 450 are currently working in the field. If you graduate in this program, describe what you think your chances are of getting a job. Include as many aspects as you can think of

Explanation / Answer

1) there are two possible outcomes of a coin : Head or tail.

Probability of getting head = total number of head / number of total possible outcome = 1 / 2 = 50%

Probability of getting tail = total number of tail / number of total possible outcome = 1 / 2 = 50%

2) to change the possibilility of passing the exam:

one shoud concentrate on their studies.

3) total number of applicants = 45

number of total job = 2

probability of getting the job = 2/45 = 0.044

4) the probability is not realistic because it doesn't count the other physical factors necessary to get the job like , skill, experience, academic , age , etc. It only delas with the numbers.
