Question
A public health center would like to develop a smoking cessation program to help people stop smoking Two thousand people from the community were sampled. The proportion of male smokers and female smokers was calculated from the results. A chi-square test was used to compare these two proportions. The 95% confidence interval was -0.023 to 0.063 and the 99% confidence interval was -0.0.7 to 0.044 (one tailed) Which conclusions can be made about the results given the confidence interval? 1) the proportion of male smokers is significantly greater than the female smokers. 2) The proportion of female smokers is significantly greater than male smokers. 3) There is a significant difference between male and female smokers. 4) There is no significant difference between male and female smokers. Please explain the answer in detail. I am having a difficult time understanding how to calculate the problem to come to the conclustion.
Explanation / Answer
The 95% confidence interval was -0.023 to 0.063.
Therefore width = (Upper limit - lower limit) = 0.063 - (-0.023) = 0.086 ~ 0.1
and the 99% confidence interval was -0.07 to 0.044
Therefore width = (Upper limit - lower limit) = 0.07 - (-0.044) = 0.086 = 0.114 ~ 0.1
Since the width for both is same There is no significant difference between male and female smokers.
