Question
I am just trying to check my answers if that is okay. I am trying to indicate whether these variables are continuous, binary, or ordinal, and additionally whether a box plot or bar graph would be sufficient.
Age - Continuous, box plot
BMI - Ordinal, bar graph
Hypertriglyceridemia - Ordinal, bar graph
Glucose - Continuous, box plot
Diabetes - Binary, bar graph
Serum uric acid level - Continuous, box plot
Heavy cigarette smoker - Binary, bar graph
Tryiglycerides - Continuous, box plot
Please let me know if there is any feedback as well. I'm just not too familuar with the scientific terms and wanted to verify my answers to ensure my understanding. Thank you!
Explanation / Answer
Age - Continuous as it can take any value within a range. Note: if required, age can be converted to discrete if only integer years are considered. A popular graphical display for a continuous variable is a box-whisker plot. Outliers or extreme values can also be assessed graphically with box-whisker plots.
BMI - Ordinal by stating whether the individual is underweight, normal, overweight, or obese. BMI is an example of common continuous measures that have been categorized to create ordinal variables. bar graph
Hypertriglyceridemia - Ordinal, bar graph
Glucose - Continuous, box plot
Diabetes - Discrete Binary(also called as dichotomous variable) as there are only two levels in the variable, bar graph
Serum uric acid level - Continuous, box plot
Heavy cigarette smoker - Binary(also called as dichotomous variable), bar graph
Tryiglycerides - Continuous, box plot
Pitfall of bar chart - Visually misled regarding the comparison by using a vertical scale that is either too expansive or too restrictive. For relative frequencies 31% and 38%, scaling the vertical axis from 0 to 40% is appropriate to accommodate the data and depict the comparison properly.
For continous variables, if the number of observations are few, stem and leaf chart is an option and has the added advantage of retaining every data point.
