Question

I am in the construction industry and statistics are used in my field regularly. The objective of construction statistics is to collect, process, summarize, and analyze valid, scientific data on the implementation of capital construction plans. Statistics are also used in construction to identify resources for increasing the efficiency of the owners investments and to improve work through the use of statistical data applied to the work flow of the construction team working on the project. When we are talking about statistics used to improve capital investments of a project, there are indexes that are used to analyze the data. First, the introduction of fixed capital stock and production capacities into operation. Also, implementation of plans and rate of growth, volume, structure, and trend of capital investments: volume and composition of uncompleted construction: and effectiveness of capital investment. When we are analyzing the statistics of construction organizations, indexed used include volume of construction and installation work by units to be put into operation, volume of gross and net output, and volume of uncompleted construction and installation work at the end of a prescribed period. In the statistics of designing and surveying organizations, indexes used include volume of designing and surveying work to be turned over to customers, volume of gross output, and volume of uncompleted designing and surveying work at the end of a year. Statistics are used frequently in construction!

Explanation / Answer

Statistics is not just limited to that ! When used in context of construction, you can also use quality control charts such as X-bar charts and R charts, which help you determine if the output is conforming to the predefined specifications, or if there is a need to revise the production strategy so that the output data falls within the desired working zone.

There are several quality statistical tools available as well to help in this data analysis.

Hope this helps !
