Question
Two paragraphs please:
if the hiring of temporary employees is here to stay, we might want to ask what Temporary Employees feel about their role in the workplace. You might be interested in the findings published by a Cornell University study:
Major findings:
1. Four out of 10 contract workers are satisfied with their non-permanent employee status.
2. The group of satisfied temporary workers (4 of 10) was largely unwilling (73 percent) to trade lower pay for greater job security, and when asked whether they would trade lower pay for better benefits, like health care, about 60 percent said no.
3. The survey found that nearly eight in 10 workers reported receiving no benefits, and nearly seven in 10 said they were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with their benefits situation.
Is this survey good or bad news for the temp agencies and the employers that contract for their temp services?
Explanation / Answer
There is a considerable proportion (40%) of the workforce that is satisfied with their temporary status and also a considerable proportion that in future is unwilling to shift to permanent status given the state of benefits they receive. The survey states that the positive correlation between the benefits received and the lower pay is very minimal, taking the percentage of people unwilling to do away with their money for benefits very higher.
The survey helps us find that 80% of the workers do not receive the benefits as around 70% workforce is not satisfied with the situations benefits. From the business perspective, it may be a bad news for temp agencies as the number of additional temp required reduces when workforce do not move to permanent status. If more people shift to permanent status, more temp employees are required, which may not happen if temps are not lured towards permanent status.
