Question

In an experiment (Rubovits & Maehr, 1973), white female undergraduates enrolled in a teacher-training course were asked to prepare a lesson for four seventh-grade students. The teachers were given information about each of the students. For half of the teachers, one student was described as “gifted” (that is, extremely intelligent) while for the other half of the teachers, the student was described as “non-gifted” (or of average intelligence). This student was either black or white. The teachers were then observed during a 40-minute period in which they interacted with the target student and three other students. The number of interactions directed toward the target students was noted, and this served as an index of how much attention the teacher gave to the student. Hypothetical data representative of the results of this experiment are presented below. (50 points) Intelligence Race Gifted Non-gifted Black 30 30 29 29 30 28 31 30 32 28 White 36 29 36 32 36 31 35 30 36 33

State the null and alternate hypotheses for each main effect in sentences, referring to the specific variables being evaluated.

Explanation / Answer

For main factor Intelligence:

H0: The main factor inteligence (gifted and nongifted) is not significant.

Ha: The main factor inteligence (gifted and nongifted) is significant.

For main factor race:

H0: The main factor race (white and black) is not significant.
