A new treatment for depression was expected to result in lower scores on the Beck Depression Inventory than a placebo (using a one tailed test); however the results indicated that the treatment did NOT lower BDI scores significantly. The mean BDI score in the group after being treated with the new treatment was 19 and the mean BDI score in the placebo control group was 17.5. The obtained value of t was 1.149 and there were 16 people in each group. Results were obtained using hand calculations (not computer software)
