Dr. Blau provides a good reasoning behind his importance of wanting to understand the “whys” of a client.
I see that this can help us get much of the questions answered for a therapist with all the input from the client.
The advantages could be that why questions can allow clients to think deeper about their problems they are discussing as well as get a better idea of the cause of an event.
The disadvantages I see which could result from asking so many “why” questions would be frustration from the client because they would not know how to answer a question.
We often do not understand why we commit a certain act besides the fact that we commit it.
Also, emphasizing why a client did a behavior will eliminate any other reason to why a certain issue occurred.
