Question
Liver cells process incoming food and take care of any undesirable chemicals that are entering our body. Pancreatic cells process the amount of sugar in our blood and secrete insulin, which signals cells to let in sugar. White blood cells devour foreign cells in our bodies. The job of the muscle cell is to contract. Which one of these cells would have the most rough endoplasmic reticulum? Which type of cell would have the most Mitochondria? Which type of cell would have the most Smooth endoplasmic reticulum? Why?
Explanation / Answer
Liver cells contains abundant smooth endoplasmic reticulum. As liver is involved in the taking care of undesirable chemicals and toxic substances, smooth endoplasmic reticulum helps the liver in the detoxification of toxic substances.
Pancreatic cells secretes a proteinaceous enzyme called insulin. Therefore it contains abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum. Main function of rough endoplasmic reticulum is protein synthesis.
Muscle cells contains abundant mitochondria. Mucsle cells are involved in contraction which is an energy requiring process, therefore to fulfil its energy needs abundant mitochodria are there. Function of mitochondria is production of energy.
