Question
3. A friend of yours want to become an endocrinologist. Her human physiology class final is approaching and yet she keeps on going out to party. You ask her if she is ready for the exam and she replies that since she wants to specialize in the endocrine system, she has focused her studies on this topic and did not spend much time redoing the analyses and exercises of the urogenital system, digestive system, cardiovascular system, and immune system. You reply to her that there is an important physiological reason (there are of course also many other non- physiology-related reasons) why this approach is wrong. What are these? Explain your reasoning
Explanation / Answer
Endocrine system secrets specific hormones in response to endogenous as well as exogenous signals. It does not function alone. It is one of the major systems in our body that helps in homeostasis.
It requires input signals from various systems for its proper function. It can only secrete specific hormones based on the functional or the developmental status of the target tissue. These target tissues can provide feedforward or feedback inputs which modulate the secretion status of the endocrine glands. So, the study of the endocrine system is incomplete without studying the structure and functioning of its target tissues.
