Question
A model rocket is fired straight up from the ground into the air, starting from rest, with an unknown constant acceleration straight upwards (Note, while the engine is firing the rocket is NOT in free fall). The rocket reaches a height of 49 m above the ground and is travelling at a speed of v = 28 m/s when the engine cuts out and the rocket continues to travel under free fall acceleration. Find the unknown upward acceleration of the rocket while the engine is firing? At what time, after it is launched does the rocket reach its maximum height?Explanation / Answer
a] using third equation om motion,
a = v^2/2s = 28^2/98 = 8 m/s^2
b] time of maximum height = t1+t2
= 28/8 + 28/9.8
= 6.357 s answer
