Question

The reading materials for Module 1 talk about two types of statistics: Descriptive and Inferential. Based on the distinction, consider what you do in your job (or most recent job that you held). Write a paragraph that addresses each of the following:

A brief description of an example that demonstrates the use of statistics for decision making in the organization (be it the corporate level, departmental level, team level, whichever is most applicable).

A brief description, in general terms, of the variables analyzed (i.e. customer home location, customer frequency of visits to your organization's facility or website, customer gender, etc.)

Indicate if this is an example of descriptive statistics or inferential statistics.

A brief description, in general terms, of what decisions get made as a result of these statistics (i.e. Potential locations, hours of operation, giveaway programs, etc.)

With the understanding that what happens in this course stays in this course (responses remain confidential within the confines of this course), do you think the variable(s) analyzed are sufficient to make those decisions? Why or why not?

How are graphical representations of data used in your line of work (or past work experiences)?

Briefly describe the pros and cons of using graphical representations of data (i.e. histogram, bar graphs, pie charts, scatterplots, line graphs) in your line of work (or most recent applicable experience).

Explanation / Answer

A store manager has a database describing a sample of customers visiting the store during pre-puja sale and developed a scale by which service in the store can be rated (proper service, reasonable price, in-time and correct billing, suitable offers and discounts). She has aslo asked the sample customers about their level of satisfaction in the store. Is there a statistically significant agreement between the store manager's objective ratings of quality service and respondent's self report of satisfaction.

This is an example of inferestial statistics.
