Question
Prior research has indicated that DOGS learn tricks faster when given treats as rewards. A new company that manufactures dog treats wants evaluate the effectiveness of their new super treats. Previous research suggests that in the population, it takes the average dog 5 hours to learn a new trick. A sample of dogs (n=121) was chosen and given super treats during their training. These 121 dogs took an average of 4.8 hours to learn a new skill. The standard deviation for the sample is 1 hour. The manufacturer wants to know if their sample of dogs (given super treats) takes fewer hours to learn a new trick than dogs in the population. They decide to conduct a one-sample t-test with an alpha level of =.05.
State the null and research hypotheses using symbols and words. 4 Points.
Calculate and report the degrees of freedom. 1 Point.
With respect to your hypotheses stated in Step 1, report the t-critical value(s). 1 Point. HINT: Use Appendix B to help construct your critical region. Be specific about whether your t-critical value is positive, negative, or both.
Calculate the test statistic (t-obtained). 3 Points. HINT: you were given mean training hours for the general population of dogs. Make sure you choose the appropriate t-test formula.
Using the information calculated in steps 1 – 4, decide whether you can/cannot reject the null hypothesis. In 3 – 5 sentences, explain why you can, or cannot, reject the null hypothesis and what that means for the study. 5 Points.
Explanation / Answer
Set Up Hypothesis
Null, H0: U=5
Alternate,takes fewer hours to learn a new trick H1: U<5
Test Statistic
Population Mean(U)=5
Sample X(Mean)=4.8
Standard Deviation(S.D)=1
Number (n)=121
we use Test Statistic (t) = x-U/(s.d/Sqrt(n))
to =4.8-5/(1/Sqrt(121))
to =-2.2
| to | =2.2
Critical Value
The Value of |t | with n-1 = 120 d.f is 1.658
We got |to| =2.2 & | t | =1.658
Make Decision
Hence Value of | to | > | t | and Here we Reject Ho
P-Value :Left Tail -Ha : ( P < -2.2 ) = 0.01486
Hence Value of P0.05 > 0.01486,Here we Reject Ho
We have evidence to support takes fewer hours to learn a new trick than dogs in the population
