Question
Epidemiology question: This is my homework question but I am still confused on how to calculate this and their is a difference?
The incidence of a disease in men is five times that in women, but the prevalence shows no sex difference. Which of the following might explain this association? Describe why each answer is either correct or incorrect. (You should have a sentence or so describing why each possible answer is either correct or incorrect).
Prevalence (P) = Incidence (I) x duration of disease (D)
a. mortality rate is greater in women
b. mortality rate is greater in men
c. duration of the disease is greater in women
Explanation / Answer
This is answer is
C. Duration of the disease is greater in women.
Because Maximum nos of women catch the disease(by the higherincidence rate) but nos. of women have the disease(by the prevalence rate). so after catching the disease, maximum women die from it(by fatality rate) and do not show up in the prevalence.
I think, you are clear now. Have a pleasure day ahead!!!
