Question

MULTIPLE CHOICE. Choose the one alternative that best completes the statement or answers the question. Solve the problem. 1) A bookcase is to be constructed as shown in the figure below. The height of the bookcase is 4 feet longer than the length of a shelf. If 26 feet of lumber is available for the entire unit (including the shelves, but NOT the back of the bookcase), find the length and height of the unit - shelf lengthH height A) length- 3 ft; height 12ft B length 11.0 ft; height 13.5 ft C) length -3 ft; height 7f D) length -4.5 ft; height -8.5 ft

Explanation / Answer

Let, x and y be the shelf length and height of the bookcase respectively.

Then, by given condition, y-x = 4........(i)

4x+2y = 26.........(ii)

Multiplying (i) by 2 and then subtract from (ii) we get,

(4x+2y)-(2y-2x) = 26-8

i.e., 6x = 18

i.e., x = 18/6

i.e., x = 3

Putting this value in (i) we get, y-3 = 4

i.e., y = 7

Hence, the shelf length = 3 ft and the height = 7 ft.

Option C is correct.
