Question

VI. Answer the following. (9 points total) 14. Monique plans to join a gym so that she can use weights and participate in fitness classes. Gym A costs $300/year plus $4 for each fitness class. Gym B costs $360/yr plus $2 for each class. a. Write a model representing the cost Ca (in dollars) for Gym A if Monique attends x fitness classes. b. Write a model representing the cost Cm(in dollars) for Gym B if Monique attends x fitness classes. c. For how many fitness classes will the cost for the two gyms be the same?

Explanation / Answer

Gym A charges $ 300/year plus $ 4 for each fitmess class and gym B charges $ 360/year plus $ 2 for each fitness class. Let Monique attend x number of fitness classes.

a.The annual cost CA, if Monique attends gym A is 300+ 4x.

b.The annual cost CB, if Monique attends gym B is 360+ 2x.

c. If the costs for the gyms A and B are to be same, then we have 300+4x = 360+2x or, 4x-2x = 360-300 or, 2x = 60 so that x = 60/2 = 30. Thus, the costs of the 2 gyms will be same if 30 fitness classes are attended.
